Heat Stroke Case Study

yesterday late July evening around 545 PM went out yakin down the n branch.  within 1/2 mile of starting was struck by a heat illness/exhaustion.   thought i was prepared.  not.  at around 730 pm finally got back into me truck and drove home.  case illustrates that even when doing the right thing when paddling injury can strike.

Awareness is crux.   having a paddle partner, never paddle alone was driven home yesterday.  my paddling bud' was a steady influence and helped mitigate the issue.  resting on the flood channel bank, covering self w/ water, crawling into the creek, floating downstream to a landing at Monroe Park and then recovering before being driven back to the launch.   Was tentative for a few moments.

Wearing a life jacket allowed me to float w/ head out of water downstream using the kayak as a floation tool to escape to the park.  One would think swimming in the creek would cool one off. For sure but by the time I was able to swim the creek (float) the issue of heat exhaustion was turning the clock towards a very dangerous situation.   Paddle partner helped gain the creek bank at the park.  analysis.

Lack of acclimization and fluids/food before paddling enhanced the s/s of heat illness when paddling.   leaving late in the day was fine but it lulled one into a false sense of safety.   wearing life jacket, depending on paddle partner to help out and allow self rescue was key. wide brimmed hat was of get help to keep sun out of face.

Always paddle safe.

Always paddle w/ a friend.   Always make sure of what you are doing is done in a safe matter and fashion.
